Vefsíðan geirdal.is er hvorki hefðbundið gallerí né kyrrstætt safn liðinna verka. Hún er lifandi, stafræn lífvera — spegill á listamann sem neitar að staðna. Í heimi þar sem hið stafræna er oft frosið í lokuðum gagnasöfnum eða stýrt af reikniritum stórfyrirtækja, leitast ég við að skilgreina nýja, sjálfstæða nálgun: D!NA (Digital New Art – Digital Nova Ars – D!NAismi).
Frumefni listarinnar og lífræn tækni
Mín list byggir á því að brúa bilið á milli hins lífræna, mannlega handverks og hins óendanlega stafræna frelsis. Fyrir mér er hver pensilstroka í Krita og hvert hnit í Inkscape hluti af stafrænu erfðaefni. Ég lít á myndbyggingu eins og efnaskipti; þar sem ljósmyndir eru „framkallaðar“ í Darktable af sömu nákvæmni og vísindamaður rannsakar sýni, og þar sem hljóðheimurinn í Ardour gefur verkunum takt og púls. Með tólum eins og RickRack, Mandelbulber og Blender flétta ég saman stærðfræðilega nákvæmni og listræna óreiðu.
Frelsi í opnum kóða: Gnu/Linux sem vinnustofa
Val mitt á verkfærum er jafnt pólitísk sem listræn yfirlýsing. Með því að nota eingöngu Gnu/Linux og opinn hugbúnað (FOSS), tryggi ég að enginn annar en ég eigi tækin sem ég skapa með. Ég er ekki leigjandi hjá hugbúnaðarrisum; ég er húsbóndi á minni eigin stafrænu vinnustöð. Þetta frelsi er forsenda þess að listin geti þróast óheft og á eigin forsendum. Hið opna kerfi er frjór jarðvegur þar sem hugmyndir fá að spíra án ytri ritskoðunar eða tæknilegra glerveggja.
Móðurmálið og ræturnar í stafrænum heimi
Þótt tæknin sé hnattræn, þá er grunnurinn íslenskur. Íslenskan er mitt andlega stýrikerfi. Hún gefur mér orð yfir blæbrigði ljóssins og kyrrðina í sköpuninni. Í þessari stafrænu sjálfsmynd spilar móðurmálið lykilhlutverk — það er tengingin við jarðveginn, söguna og það sem er ómælanlegt. Með því að tjá mig á íslensku innan um alþjóðlegan kóða, varðveiti ég mannlega kjarnann í vélinni.
Vefurinn sem þroskaferli
Lýsingin „Stafræn sjálfsmynd í stöðugri þróun“ er loforð til gestisins. Þú ert ekki að skoða grafreit hugmynda, heldur ertu að verða vitni að vexti í rauntíma. Rétt eins og manneskjan þroskast og breytist með hverri reynslu, þá breytist þessi vefur. Hann er lífefnafræðileg og stafræn vegferð þar sem hver uppfærsla er ný stökkbreyting í leit minni að sannleika.
Hér er ekkert frosið. Hér er allt í mótun. Hér er tæknin ekki bara tól, heldur hluti af mínu eigin stafræna erfðaefni.

Artistic Statement and Manifesto by D!NAist Ref Geirdal
The website geirdal.is is neither a traditional gallery nor a static archive of past works. It is a living, digital organism—a mirror held up to an artist who refuses to stagnate. In a world where the digital is often frozen in proprietary silos or dictated by corporate algorithms, I seek to define a new, sovereign approach: D!NA (Digital New Art – Digital Nova Ars – D!NAism).
Elements of Art and Organic Technology
My art is built on bridging the gap between organic human craftsmanship and infinite digital freedom. To me, every brushstroke in Krita and every coordinate in Inkscape is a segment of digital genetic code. I view visual composition as metabolism; where photographs are “developed” in Darktable with the precision of a scientist examining a specimen, and where the soundscapes of Ardour provide the rhythm and pulse. Through tools like RickRack, Mandelbulber and Blender, I weave together mathematical rigor and artistic chaos.
Freedom in Open Code: Gnu/Linux as a Studio
My choice of tools is as much a political statement as an artistic one. By using exclusively Gnu/Linux and Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), I ensure that I, and no one else, own the tools of my creation. I am not a tenant of software giants; I am the master of my own digital workstation. This freedom is a prerequisite for art to evolve unhindered and on its own terms. The open system is the fertile soil where ideas sprout without external censorship or technical glass walls.
Mother Tongue and Roots in a Digital World
While the technology is global, the foundation is Icelandic. Icelandic is my spiritual operating system. It provides the vocabulary for the nuances of light and the stillness in creation. In this digital self-portrait, my native language plays a vital role—it is the connection to the soil, the history, and the immeasurable. By expressing myself in Icelandic amidst international code, I preserve the human core within the machine.
The Web as a Process of Growth
The description “Current ever-evolving digital self-portrait” is a promise to the visitor. You are not viewing a graveyard of ideas; you are witnessing growth in real-time. Just as a human being matures and changes with every experience, so does this website. It is a biochemical and digital journey where every update is a new mutation in my search for truth.
Nothing here is frozen. Everything is in formation. Here, technology is not just a tool, but a part of my own digital DNA.
